Iraq forms committee to amend constitution

July 18, 2016 at 10:50 am

The Iraqi Parliament yesterday formed a committee to amend the constitution with Parliament Speaker Salim Al-Jabouri asking the different factions to choose who they would like to represent them in the committee.

MP Salim Chawki told the Anadolu Agency that the committee will review 18 controversial articles in the constitution.

According to the Iraqi constitution, an amendment can be made after the approval of two-thirds of the members of Parliament, the people approve it through a general referendum, and the president ratifies the changes within seven days.

Some of the items which are to be discussed are articles relating to oil and gas, the president’s powers, the sharing of financial resources, power sharing, citizenship and personal status.

Chawki also explained that the Parliament has sent the names of nine deputies to the members’ committee to lift their immunity. He added that some members have exceeded the allowed number of absences while others have lawsuits filed against them.
