Head of the International Union of Muslim Scholars Dr. Youssef Al-Qaradawi has called on the Turkish people to continue to protest against the attempted coup that occurred on Saturday.

“I call on the Turkish people to remain in the squares until victory has been fully achieved and the calamity has eased,” Qaradawi said in a tweet posted on the social networking website Twitter.

The scholar also criticised the supporters of the coup in Turkey. “To those remaining silent about the burning of humans in Burma, displacement in Syria and detention in Egypt, then they speak about the rights of the coup organisers in Turkey? Where is shame?”

The Turkish authorities said that they succeeded in foiling an attempted coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the early hours of Saturday.
