Palestinian factions sign Charter of Honour on municipal elections

July 25, 2016 at 10:10 am

Prominent Palestinian factions have signed a Charter of Honour regarding the municipal elections slated for 8 October, Anadolu news agency reported on Friday.

Reporting the Central Elections Committee, Anadolu said that the Charter of Honour stresses on respecting the results of the elections regardless of the winner.

It also called for the factions to “avoid defamation, insulting and libelling each other, as well as to avoid exploiting religion and arousing religious, tribal, sectarian, family, racial and regional seditions among the voters”.

The Central Elections Committee said that 13 factions separately signed the Charter of Honour, including Hamas, Fatah, Popular Front, Democratic Front, People’s Party and Fida.

On 15 July, Hamas announced that it would allow the conducting of municipal elections in the Gaza Strip, which has been under its control since mid-2007, and later on it said it would participate in the elections.

In July last year, the Palestinian ministerial council announced that municipal elections in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank would take place on 8 October this year.

The last municipal elections took place in 2012 in the West Bank but did not take place in Gaza.
