Russia slams US strikes against Daesh in Libya

August 3, 2016 at 10:19 am

The Russian ambassador in Libya has criticised the US air strikes against Daesh sites in the city of Sirte. According to Ivan Molotkov, such attacks “lack legal grounds,” Russia’s Interfax news agency has reported.

On Monday, the Pentagon said that it had carried out specific air strikes against the targets in Sirte, “at the request of the national unity government headed by Fayez Sarraj.” Spokesman Peter Cook explained that the strikes were aimed at “precision targets” suggested by the Libyan government that were “vetted” by US officials.

Ambassador Molotkov, however, insisted that the US strikes against terrorists in Libya “require a decision from the UN Security Council.” A US State Department official rejected Molotkov’s claims.
