PA urges UNSC to stop Israeli settlement construction in Jerusalem

August 12, 2016 at 9:47 am

The Palestinian foreign ministry has called on the international community and the United Nations to take quick measures to halt the Israeli settlement construction in the city of Jerusalem.

In a statement reported by the Wafa news agency, the ministry called on the UN Security Council to shoulder its political and legal responsibilities to rein Israel in and ensure it adheres to international resolutions and end its occupation.

The ministry condemned the construction of 62 housing units in the Beit Hanina project as part of a project designed to expand settlement construction north of Jerusalem. It also slammed the Jerusalem municipality’s confiscation of a piece of land in the Mount Scopus neighbourhood in Jerusalem in order to establish a synagogue for a Jewish settlement.

According to the ministry, the Israeli escalation coincides with Jewish extremists calls to break into Al-Aqsa Mosque.
