Jordan and Germany sign 20 million euro grant to support education of Syrian refugees

The Jordanian Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation signed a financing agreement with the German KfW Development Bank in Amman for the amount of 20 million euros to support the education of Syrian refugees at Jordanian schools.

The deal was signed by Jordan’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Imad Fakhoury and Director of KfW Development Bank in Amman Florian Rabe.

“The grant is part of the support donor countries pledged to extend to Jordan during a meeting for the donor community held in London early this year,” the ministry said in a statement.

Germany pledged to provide 300 million euros ($335 million) in aid to Jordan during 2016.

The grant will be used to pay the salaries needed for the operation of double-shift schools in the 2016/17 school year, thus supporting the Ministry of Education in providing and extending access to formal education for Syrian refugee children in Jordan.

Syrian students represent 11 per cent of Jordan’s students.
