Egypt prosecutor orders investigation into two former presidential candidates on spying charges

August 16, 2016 at 11:33 am

Egyptian Attorney General Nabil Sadiq on Monday ordered the opening of an urgent investigation into former presidential candidates Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh and Hamdeen Sabahi on charges of collaborating with Lebanese Hezbollah and Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.

The lawsuit was filed by lawyer Ashraf Farhat and calls for Sabahi and Aboul Fotouh to be arrested upon their return to the country from Lebanon.

Farahat claims Aboul Fotouh and Sabahi attended a Hezbollah conference in Lebanon. He alleges that the two politicians shouldn’t have attended the conference as an Egyptian court verdict has said the group “committed crimes against Egyptian national security”.
