Report: 560 minors arrested in East Jerusalem in 2016

August 16, 2016 at 5:02 pm

Israeli forces have detained 560 children from occupied East Jerusalem since the beginning of 2016, 110 are still being held in Israeli jails, the Palestinian Committee of Prisoners’ Affairs revealed yesterday.

Of those still in detention, four are girls and 10 are boys who are being held in juvenile detention centres, committee head Issa Qaraqe said.

Israeli authorities placed 60 of those released under house arrest, he said.

The head of the Jerusalem Committee for Families of Prisoners, Amjad Abu Asab, said that most children held in Israeli jails were beaten and assaulted by Israeli forces.

Some of the minors, Abu Asab added, were injured and denied the right to have a family member present during interrogation. He warned that children held in Israeli prisons suffer physical and psychological pressure that has “long term effects on their psyche.”
