Refugee children have been exposed to sexual exploitation by sex traffickers in the southern Swedish city of Malmo, sources told local media yesterday.

According to Anadolu, the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported a principal of a school, who was not named, saying that refugee children were sexually exploited.

The principal said that a male and female refugee student were taken from the school and returned with valuables and mobiles, hinting that they were given the mobiles to remain in contact with their abusers.

Swedish police, the school principal was reported saying, did not immediately investigate complaints regarding the issue but recently started to take the matter seriously.

Meanwhile, the Coordinator Against Human Trafficking Lisa Green confirmed that refugee children were sexually exploited in Malmo, according to Sydsvenska, a Swedish newspaper.

Green noted that they reported 40 incidents to the police in 2014 alone, but the number of children exploited was far beyond this number. Green criticised the police for failing to launch investigations.
