Iran released images of its long-range missile defence system named as Bavar 373 for the first time yesterday.

According to senior member of the armed forces, the missile system was developed following Russia’s refusal to deliver the S-300 missile system to Iran in 2007, adding that it operates in the same way.

Iran and Russia concluded a contract in 2007 on the delivery of the S-300 system, but in 2010 Moscow suspended the deal due to the nuclear sanctions imposed on Iran.

In 2015, just before the conclusion of an international agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme which led to a gradual lift to the sanctions, Moscow permitted the transfer of the S-300 missiles to Iran.
