Parliamentary union condemns Israeli desecration of religious sites in Jerusalem

August 23, 2016 at 10:40 am

The Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), headed by the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, has condemned Israel’s “barbaric policy” against Islamic and Christian sites in Jerusalem. Nabih Berri has called on the UN to “respect Security Council Resolution 271, which condemns the Israeli desecration of Al-Aqsa Mosque” specifically.

Berri’s statement said that the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) should fulfil its obligation to protect Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem. He appealed to the international community to assume its responsibilities regarding the brutal Israeli practices which, if allowed to continue, will increase tension in the region.

The IPU has also called on regional states to make efforts to resolve the Palestinian issue, stressing that it is at the core of conflict in the Middle East.
