Egypt’s minister of supply resigns amid corruption probe

August 26, 2016 at 11:04 am

The Egyptian Minister of Supply Khaled Hanafi reportedly submitted his resignation to the cabinet yesterday, according to Al-Arabiya.

Al-Arabiya did not provide any further details about the source of the news and it was not able to communicate with the ministry.

Sources added that there had been reports the night prior to the cabinet meeting that Hanafi may submit his resignation in order to prevent being interrogated regarding his role in a wheat corruption case.

Egypt launched an inquiry in July into whether millions of dollars intended to subsidise farmers were used to purchase wheat that did not exist.

According to Reuters, a corruption report delivered late last week concluded that some 200,000 tonnes of wheat was missing at ten private storage sites visited by the commission.
