Pregnant mother allegedly assaulted in Barcelona by Far right extremists for wearing Niqab

On Wednesday Spanish Police arrested two individuals on suspicion of committing a an alleged assault on a pregnant woman who was wearing a niqab, a police statement reported. If proven, the offence would be considered a hate-crime.

The incident allegedly too place on Monday evening the heavily pregnant woman was walking with her family (including children) in central Barcelona.

According to Police, two individuals, who proceeded to direct insults toward the woman, accosted the family though the woman’s husband sought to defend her.

According to witnesses the attackers went on to push the husband and then kicked the woman in her abdomen. The attack was ultimate the brought to an end through the intervention of passers-by and the police.

Spain, like many countries across the Europe, has seen a surge in far-right wing political activity in recent years, much of which has been driven by anti-immigrant and islamophobic sentiment.
