Finland to send 50 military advisers to help Kurds in Iraq

Finland is to send 50 military advisers to help train Kurdish Peshmerga forces in Iraq in their battle again Daesh, Peshmerga officials revealed today.

The move comes following a request from Peshmerga officials for Finland to further help their ranks further. The new deployment brings the number of Finnish military specialists in the Kurdish region of Iraq to 100.

Kurdish military commander Sirwan Barzani said: “The talks in Finland with members of parliament and government ended with the decision to 50 military advisers to train Peshmerga forces.”

“The Finish Ministry of Defence agreed to send 50 additional military advisers to the Kurdistan region, in addition to agreeing to receive wounded Peshmerga forces who will receive treatment in Finland.”

France, Britain, Germany, Italy, Belgium and Sweden are among the European nations that have deployed military personnel to the Kurdish region of Iraq.

Kurdish military representatives met with Finnish officials this week during a visit to the country.
