The United Nations and humanitarian agencies in Libya have issued an urgent appeal for $10.7 million to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of some 80,000 people trapped in Sirte.

According to reports by those who have fled the area there is a shortage of food and medicine whilst serious rights violations like public beheadings are carried out by members of Daesh.

Daesh fighters sent from eastern Syria entered the southern coastal city of Sirte in 2014 and went on to create the terror group’s largest stronghold outside of Syria and Iraq in early 2015.

Humanitarian issues in the city have developed as a result of military operations against Daesh.
