Benkirane: We are confident we will win the elections

Morocco’s Islamist Justice and Development party is “confident” that it will win the parliamentary election next month, the party’s head Abdelilah Benkirane said yesterday.

Benkirane made the remarks during a speech to mark the start of his party’s electoral campaign, where he thanked the 20,000 strong crowd.

“Your attendance means that elections are real and proves that we will win,” he said.

“People depend on you,” he addressed the gathering, “the people lay their hope and trust on you.”

Benkirane also noted that his party faced many difficulties since they were elected however they have carried on with the “reforms that saved” the country.

“Do not get surprised with what the government did not carry out,” he said, “but you should be surprised with what the government could carry out under all the difficult circumstances and obstacles.”

The head of the government stressed that his country contributed to stabilising the country and helped overcome the wave of the Arab Spring.

Thirty parties are taking part in the country’s elections on 7 October.
