September 27, 2016 at 3:43 am

Yasser Thiyab Hamduna, 41, who died on Sunday morning, suffered from cardiomegaly – an enlarged heart – after suffering years of neglect in Israeli custody, Maan News reports.

According to a statement by Palestinian Committee of Prisoners’ Affairs – released on Monday – Hamduna’s body had been subject to an autopsy – ordered by in an Israeli court – in order to clarify the cause of death. The procedure was carried out at the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute in Tel Aviv with the participation of two Palestinian doctors.

The statement claimed that Hamduna was subject to deliberate medical negligence while in Israeli custody despite their awareness of his health issues, including shortness of breath, heart problems, and ear pains.

Moreover, in 2003, Hamduna was beaten harshly by prison guards and was sent to al-Ramla prison clinic after that. He later went on to further surgery in an Israeli hospital in January 2015.

Abd al-Rahman Shadid, a spokesman for Hamas, responded to the report by stating that it,

showcased the Israeli occupation’s cruel brutality

Since the occupation began in 1967, 208 Palestinians have died in Israeli prisons according to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS).

The Palestinian group Addameer, which advocates for prisoner’s rights, has described a “deliberate policy of neglect” in Israeli prisons.
