US seeks 'like-minded allies' for Syria talks

October 5, 2016 at 5:16 am

The US is seeking talks with “like-minded allies” over Syria, the State Department announced, Tuesday.

Spokesman Mark Toner told reporters,

With regard to the way forward in the civil war in Syria, we’re talking to like-minded allies, partners, within the ISSG [International Syria Support Group] and we’re meeting internally as a government to plot out the next steps,”

Coming one day after the US suspended cooperation with Russia, which the US blames for the breakdown of a short-lived ceasefire, Toner went on to refer directly to possible US links with other members of the ad-hoc International Syria Support Group (ISSG), that was established during negotiations in Vienna, last year.

We’re going to work with other members of the ISSG … We are looking at how we can leverage and work with the other members of the ISSG.
