Algeria has been commended by the United Kingdom (UK) for “leading the way” in the fight against violent extremism.

Visiting Algiers yesterday the UK Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Minister for the Middle East and Africa, Tobias Ellwood, said it was clear “that Algeria is leading the way in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism in a world facing the growth of the scourge, which is considered as the most important challenge of the 21st century.”

Speaking at a press conference, Ellwood said Algeria and the UK are doing their best to counter the threat of extremism and also highlighted his discussion of other regional and international issues of common interest including the situation in Libya.

Ellwood called on the international community to speak in one voice in support of the UN-backed Government of the National Accord in Libya and called on Libyans to unite for peace and stability in the country.
