There are some 275,000 civilians in the besieged part of Aleppo

October 7, 2016 at 4:03 am

UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura has issues a stark warning that Russian and Syrian regime attacks on the besieged, opposition-held areas of eastern Aleppo, could be destroyed if the current assault continues.

Telling press:

No one can deny that we are in an emergency mode regarding Syria, Aleppo and future of the conflict.

Going on to describe the miserable situation in the city,

Since 23rd of September, 376 people have been killed, one third of them children cannot be all terrorists… There is a need of medical evacuation…for 200 people in eastern Aleppo

adding that,

In maximum two-and-half months, the city of eastern Aleppo at this rate, may be totally destroyed…thousands of civilians, not terrorists, will be killed…this is what you, we and world will be seeing when we will be trying to celebrate Christmas or end of the year

Speaking to press in Geneva, de Mistura offered to go to eastern Aleppo himself in order escort fighters from the Islamist group al-Nusra if they wished to evacuate from the city.

l am personally and physically ready to accompany you

There are some 275,000 civilians in the besieged part of the city, though Russia and the Syrian government have said their campaign against the city is targeted at the, approximately, 900 members of the al-Nusra group. Though there are approximately 8,000 opposition fighters from various factions also in the city.

De Mistura went on to pled with the Russian and Syrian regimes,

Please look at my eyes too, and eyes of the world and the public opinion. Are you ready to continue this type of level of fighting using that type of weapons and de-facto destroy the whole eastern city of Aleppo, with its own 275,000 people, for the sake of eliminating 1,000 al-Nusra fighters? Or are you rather ready to announce immediate and total aerial bombardment hold if al-Nusra leaves?
