Opposition leader calls on OIC to give him Syria's seat

October 11, 2016 at 10:52 am

The head of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces, Anas Al-Abdah, has called on the Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to allocate Syria’s seat to the opposition. The coalition, he pointed out, is the legitimate representative of the people of Syria, as acknowledged by the Arab League. Al-Abdah also asked Iyad Ameen Madani to exert all efforts in international forums to stop the crimes that are occurring in Syria.

In his message sent on Monday following the OIC meeting on the escalation in Aleppo, Al-Abdah asserted the need for the organisation to play an effective role in international forums to put an end to the human tragedy and stop the crimes committed against the Syrian people, particularly in Aleppo. More than 300,000 civilians are trapped in the city and subject to bombing raids by Russia and the Assad regime, as well as multinational militias.

The OIC met in Jeddah over the weekend to discuss the Syrian crisis. Al-Abdah’s message drew delegates’ attention to the fact that the meeting coincides with the anniversary of the start of the Russian aggression against the Syrians, which has left thousands of civilians dead, injured and displaced. The meeting closed with a renewal of the OIC’s commitment to the Syrian Arab Republic’s sovereignty, political independence, unity and territorial integrity.
