Turkey, Israel discuss providing electricity to Palestinians

October 14, 2016 at 1:00 pm

Turkey and Israel discussed yesterday ways to provide electricity to the Palestinians, including setting up electricity power stations in Jenin and Gaza.

In a meeting between Turkey’s Minister for Energy and Natural Resources, Berat Albayrak, and his Israeli counterpart, Yuval Steinitz, the ministers stressed the importance of cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the energy sector.

They explained that they addressed the Israeli opportunities to export gas to Turkey and decided to open discussions on building a gas pipeline to pump Israeli gas to Europe.

“What we decided is to establish immediately a dialogue between our two governments… in order to examine the possibility and the feasibility of such a project,” Steinitz said, adding that “the Turkish option is very important.”

This is the first meeting between Albayrak and Steinitz following the normalisation of relations in June after a 2010 crisis triggered by Israel’s deadly storming of a Gaza-bound aid ship.
