UN employee appears in Israeli court over Hamas accusations

October 14, 2016 at 11:17 am

A United Nations engineer in the Gaza Strip was arraigned yesterday in a Beersheva court, accused by Israeli authorities of abusing his position to aid Hamas.

Waheed Al-Borsh was formally indicted in September, following his arrest by Israeli forces in July.

Al-Borsh was held and detained for weeks without legal representation.

According to The Jerusalem Post, Al-Borsh’s lawyer will be filing several pre-trial motions, and told the court that her client had collapsed in prison.

The paper continued: “The court ordered Tsemel to present a full answer to the charges by October 25, while recognizing that a possible plea deal was being discussed.”

Following an internal review in August, the UNDP stated that the Israeli charge sheet against Al-Borsh did not square with the facts.
