Oman raises fuel prices

October 18, 2016 at 12:44 pm

Petrol prices in Oman are set to rise as the Omani government has introduced a new grade of petrol into the country.

The new petrol grade, MOGAS 91, will be available from 1 November.

“After revising fuel prices in mid-January, consumers were heading to the cheapest grade fuel which is M90,” said Salim Al Aufi, undersecretary of the Oil and Gas Ministry, at a press conference on Sunday.

He then said that refineries in Oman were planning to produce a better quality M91 petrol grade to replace M90.

Motorists who are used to buying M90 petrol would be charged higher amounts for the same grade they’re currently using, meaning fuel prices in Oman will increase overall.

Petrol stations have been given a deadline by the end of this year to start supplying the M91 petrol grade.

Many Omanis have expressed their discontent at this move. According to Al Aufi, at least 70 per cent of the vehicles in Oman can run on the new fuel grade.
