Egypt government meets to tackle planned protests

October 21, 2016 at 11:50 am

A number of political parties are to meet in Egypt tomorrow to discuss the increase in living costs ahead of demonstrations planned for 11 November.

Prime Minister Sherif Ismail will meet with members of the House of Representatives and the head of parliamentary committees to discuss economic developments in the country in an effort to placate tensions as Egyptians plan to protest against the rising of basic commodities.

During the meeting, the government will reveal the steps it is taking to help Egyptians and how opposition groups can help it.

Social media activists have launched a campaign, which have become known as “the revolution of the poor”, calling for demonstrations across Egypt on 11 November denouncing the rise in prices and the current social and economic situation in Egypt.

Egypt has been hit by severe price hikes since the ouster of the first democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi in 2013 in a military coup. In addition to this, Saudi Arabia ceased the delivery of petrol to the country after Egypt voted against it in a UN meeting about the situation in Syria.
