UNRWA distributes $1.7m for reconstruction of Gaza

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said today that it will distribute more than $1.7 million in aid to support the families who were harmed by the 2014 Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip.

The UN agency said in a press release that it will allocate $951,000 for reconstruction and $759,000 for severe repair works in Gaza.

It added that the assistance will reach 242 refugee families from across the strip, with these families able to access this aid through local banks this week.

“Emergency shelter – including support for home repairs, reconstruction and interim shelter solutions – is a top priority for UNRWA,” the agency said in the press release, stressing that it is committed to supporting affected families.

Israel launched a 51-day assault on the Gaza Strip which it named “Operation Protective Edge”. During that time it damaged and destroyed more than 100,000 homes affecting more than 600,000 people, UN estimates revealed.
