Egypt clears 13 minors of protesting charges

October 25, 2016 at 2:13 pm

Thirteen Egyptian children were acquitted on Sunday of charges of participating in unauthorised demonstrations which took place on 25 May against the marine demarcation border agreement between Egypt and Saudi Arabia, according to Al-Shorouk newspaper.

The paper quoted lawyer Samah El-Nahhas as saying that the judgment is subject to appeal by the Egyptian public prosecution, but it has not been challenged.

In early April, Cairo signed an agreement with Riyadh for the demarcation of the mutual border, including ceding sovereignty over the islands of Tiran and Sanafir to Saudi Arabia, which sparked widespread public protests.

Authorities arrested around 270 people over charges of demonstrating without a permit and disturbing the public peace. Most of those arrested have been released, while others are still in prison awaiting trial.
