Badie and 36 Brotherhood members handed final verdicts

An Egyptian court has upheld the life sentence handed down to Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie and 36 others over accusations that they incited violence, the Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.

A judicial source told Anadolu that the Court of Cassation rejected the appeals filed by the defendants against their life sentences, adding that the decision is now final as they would only get one chance to appeal.

Anadolu said that this is the second verdict of its kind which was upheld against Muslim Brotherhood leaders by the Court of Cassation this week.

On Saturday the court accepted a verdict of 20 years in prison handed down to the first freely elected Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi and other Muslim Brotherhood leaders on charges of inciting violence.

Egypt has been sunk in chaos since a military coup ousted Morsi in 2013. Since then, authorities have launched a crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood, which they deem a “terrorist group”, and those who oppose the coup.
