Hamas presented Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas a comprehensive vision to achieve reconciliation by means of specific mechanisms and measures to implement past agreements reached in Cairo, Doha, and Al-Shati, especially regarding holding elections on all levels.

In a statement, issued after the head of Hamas’ political bureau, Khaled Meshaal, and his deputy, Ismail Haniyeh, met with Abbas in Qatar on Thursday, the movement said: “After presenting the challenges and dangers surrounding our cause and people, we discussed our Palestinian priorities at this point in time, especially achieving a national reconciliation and ending the division.”

“During this discussion, the movement’s leadership presented a comprehensive vision to achieve reconciliation by means of specific work mechanisms and measures to implement past agreements reached in Cairo, Doha and Al-Shati, especially those regarding conducting complete elections on all levels, along with committing to the principle of national partnership and cooperation in terms of the various positions, responsibilities and decisions.”

“This can be achieved through the national unity government, Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) and Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO), as well as through agreeing to a political and struggle programme to confront the occupation, settlements and the violations in Jerusalem and across the country and working together to provide the requirements for perseverance and a dignified life for our people,” it added.

Hamas expressed its gratitude and appreciation for Qatar’s role in supporting the Palestinian people and their just cause, as well as its continued efforts to achieve Palestinian reconciliation.

It also praised the efforts made to relieve the suffering of the people in Gaza and breaking the siege imposed on them. It reiterated the movement’s keenness to build and develop good and balanced relations with various Arab and Muslim countries.
