Houthis slam UN envoy for interfering in Yemen

November 3, 2016 at 1:05 pm

The Houthi militia spokesperson has accused the UN envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, of fuelling the war and inducing the country’s humanitarian crisis, Al Arabiya reported.

Mohammed Abdul Salam made the comments a day after the UN official called on the primary political actors in Yemen to prioritise national interests, during a briefing at the UN Security Council on Monday.

Salam accused the UN envoy of fabricating evidence against the Houthi militias, and also said Ahmed’s interference in Yemeni affairs is unwelcome as he has transgressed his limits within his role.

Ahmed is expected to land in Yemen’s capital Sana’a today for a meeting with Houthi/Saleh delegations to negotiate a new round of peace talks.

He visited Sana’a last week to propose a peace plan that involves unity government with power shared between the Hadi government, the Houthis and the delegation that represents ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The Hadi government rejected the proposal.

Ahmed is then expected to head to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to meet with exiled Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi for further discussions.
