Sultan Qaboos meets Prince Charles in rare appearance

The Sultan of Oman Qaboos Bin Said received on Saturday Prince of Wales Prince Charles and his wife Camilla at the Sultanate Palace – Bait Al Barakah – in the capital Muscat.

The Oman News Agency (ONA) said that the royals discussed cooperation between their countries in various sectors to achieve the joint interests of the Omani and British people, as well as ways to strengthen relations between the two countries.

The Prince of Wales arrived to the Omani capital of Muscat with his wife and other British officials last Friday for a three-day visit. The visit came after the Omani leader’s return last April from a two-month medical trip in Germany, which was the second in a 2-year time.

The Diwan of the Royal Court said in a statement that Sultan Qaboos returned to Oman after the completion of a medical check-up in Germany, which showed good results, without providing further details.

In 13 February Sultan Qaboos travelled to conduct a medical check-up, following a lengthy treatment in 2015 which has lasted for eight months.

The sultan’s ill health and repeated hospital spells in Germany have focused attention on the fact that he has no designated successor.

Oman’s Sultan Qaboos Bin Said took power in 23 July 1970, with the longest tenure among all Arab rulers. Qaboos is the 8th Omani Sultan of the Busaid’s family.

Unlike his Arabian Gulf counterparts, Qaboos has no designated successor as he is unmarried and has no children or brothers.
