The Committee for Political Prisoners’ Families in the occupied West Bank monitored 507 violations carried out by the Palestinian Authority (PA) during October and September, Quds Press reported yesterday.

In a statement, the committee, which was formed by Hamas, said the PA arrested 191 Palestinians and summoned 164 others on political grounds, noting that the last two months witnessed an “unprecedented” escalation against university students across the occupied West Bank.

According to the statement, most arrests took place in the southern West Bank city of Hebron where the PA arrested 72 Palestinians and the least in Jericho, where four Palestinians were detained.

The statement classified the arrests, noting that the PA arrested 82 prisoners freed from Israeli jails, 122 previous political prisoners, 53 students, 19 teachers, seven journalists and two Imams.

It also said that 78 were arrested in house raids, 71 after being summoned for investigation and 12 were kidnapped, no information was given about how 30 others made their way to the PA prisons.

A number of the political prisoners have been on hunger strike, seeking their freedom. However, Ayman Sharawneh, a former prisoner who went on hunger strikes inside PA and Israeli jails, downplayed the importance of the hunger strike inside PA jails.

He said that the PA does not care about the healthcare situation or the deterioration in prisoners’ health as a result of the hunger strikes.
