The European Union and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Wednesday launched a new programme to boost Gaza Industrial Estate (GIE).

In a statement, the EU said the €2.4 million programme will be implemented by the UNDP over a period of 20 months.

According to the statement, the new programme aims to reduce unemployment which reached 41 per cent as well as reinforce the GIE electrical, wastewater and water systems.

This is part of a wider €10 million programme that aims to promote inclusive, sustainable, private sector-led economic development.

A delegation from the European Union arrived on Tuesday to the Gaza Strip through Beit Hanoun crossing for a visit which lasted several hours to inspect the economic and living conditions there.

Gaza Industrial Estate suffered large-scale destruction during the three wars launched by Israel in 2008-2009, 2012 and 2014.
