Qatar confirmed its support for the Lebanese Army yesterday as the Qatari foreign minister arrived in Beirut to congratulate President Michel Aoun on his election and to invite him to Doha.

Sheikh Mohammad Bin Abdul Rahman Al-Thani met with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri upon his arrival, to discuss the warming ties between the GCC and Beirut.

According to the Qatar Press Agency, Hariri announced that the Gulf States are the “primary supporters of Lebanon.”

Hariri added that “there is no doubt that it must turn the page”, referencing Lebanon’s desire to improve relations with the Arab world, in particular Gulf states.

Al-Thani praised Beirut for its hosting of Syrian refugees. The two sides discussed the Lebanese Army’s lack of equipment for its counterterrorist operations. It was also revealed that Lebanon seeks to establish oil projects with Qatar.
