The Moroccan Human Rights Organisation criticised Morocco’s police for using allegedly excessive force yesterday, claiming that its use of live fire against suspects who attacked members of the security forces was disproportionate.

According to the human rights NGO, Moroccan police took aim at “sensitive areas” on the human body which has led to severe injuries possibly leading to the deaths of suspects.

In a statement, the organisation called on the Moroccan authorities to provide security personnel with all means to control and repel any possible attack or threat against them without needing to resort to lethal force.

“Security is the most important human right, and that includes the security of law enforcement to defend us. However, the right to life, as enshrined in international conventions and Chapter 20 of the Moroccan Constitution is a sacred right that must be protected,” the statement said.

The organisation said the authorities are investigating two incidents were citizens were killed by members of the security forces including one in the city of Casablanca.
