UN Envoy to Yemen arrives in Aden

December 2, 2016 at 2:08 pm

UN Envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed arrived in the temporary Yemeni capital Aden yesterday to meet with President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.

His visit comes after the Hadi government rejected the UN envoy’s peace plan which requires Hadi and Vice President General Ali Mohsen Al-Ahmar to step down in order to create a unity government.

Currently, central parts of the country are experiencing heavy fighting with the battle against Houthi and Saleh forces in Taiz intensifying in an effort to break the siege on Taiz. As a consequence, fighting in Marib is also beginning to escalate.

Yemen has been locked in a bitter battle between Houthi rebels allied with forces loyal to ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh and government forces led by Hadi, along with local tribes and resistance forces backed by the Saudi-led coalition.

Nearly 60,000 people have been killed as a result of the conflict and more than three million have been displaced.
