Barghouti calls on PA to analyse its operations

Senior Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti has called on the Palestinian Authority (PA) to review its functions in order to be a bridge for freedom, self-determination, independence and the establishment of a Palestine state, Quds Press reported yesterday.

Barghouti, who has been held in Israeli jails since 2002, spoke through his lawyer to say: “I will never give up my political direction, will never give up national unity attempts and will reinforce the free and national liberation address.”

He expressed his happiness at achieving the highest number of votes in the Fatah Central Committee elections, noting this “stresses Fatah’s recognition of its national resistance approach”.

In addition, he called for the PA to reinforce its relationship with its neighbouring Arab countries as well as friendly Western states.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned Barghouti’s elections, saying: “Marwan is a leader of a terrorist organisation that encouraged and led terror attacks that killed and wounded dozens of innocent Israelis.”

Barghouti played leading roles in both the first and second Palestinian Intifadas – in 1987 and 2000 respectively – against the Israeli occupation.

He is now serving five consecutive five sentences for his alleged involvement in attacks on Israelis.
