Israeli authorities yesterday confiscated a truck carrying pieces of iron en route to the besieged Gaza Strip, claiming the material would be used for anti-Israel activities.

Israeli sources told Ma’an that officials from COGAT, the Israeli agency responsible for implementing Israeli policies in the occupied Palestinian territory, in cooperation with Israeli intelligence and crossing authority prevented the truck from entering the Gaza Strip via the Kerem Shalom crossing for carrying iron pieces.

Sources added that the truck was supposed to be carrying shelves to be used in supermarkets but was instead carrying five-metre long iron pieces.

The truck driver was transferred to the Israeli police for interrogations.

A spokesperson for COGAT was not immediately available to comment on the incident.

Since June 2007, the Gaza Strip has been under an Israeli siege that has caused a decline in the standards of living as well as unprecedented levels of unemployment and unrelenting poverty.
