Tunisian prosecutors have opened a judicial investigation against 10 people who are being held in custody for the murder of engineer Mohammed Al-Zawari.

Drone expert Al-Zawari, 49, was gunned down last week in his car outside his home in Sfax.

Sofiene Selliti, spokesperson for the Court of First Instance in Tunis and the judicial counter-terrorism division, stated that the suspects are accused of Al-Zawari’s murder, conspiring against the internal security of the state and terrorism crimes.

Reports have confirmed that the dean of investigating judges at the judicial counter-terrorism division has begun interrogating the suspects in the presence of the prosecutor.

“The case of the assassination of engineer Mohammed Al-Zawari was entrusted on Monday to the judicial counter-terrorism division, which means that this case is now considered a terrorist case,” Deputy Prosecutor General at the Court of First Instance of Sfax, Faouzi Masmoudi, told Tunis Afrique Presse.

Those in custody are linked to an Israeli journalist who travelled to the country to shoot a short video in front of Al-Zawari’s home for Israel’s Channel 10 prompting reports the video was used for the purpose of spying.
