Egypt imprisons 193 people for post-coup violence

January 2, 2017 at 2:51 pm

An Egyptian military court has sentenced 193 people to between three and 25 years in prison for offences linked to post-coup violence in Al-Menya, Arabs48.com reported on Sunday. Ten others were cleared at the same hearing.

According to Khalid Al-Komi, a member of the defence legal team, the court sentenced 42 people for 10 years each; two got 5-year sentences, while a minor was sent to prison for three years.

He added that the same court sentenced 148 people in absentia over the same accusations and acquitted ten others. The acquittals, he added, were due to a lack of evidence. All of the court’s decisions can be appealed against.

The alleged violence, explained the lawyer, included breaking into government offices and looting furniture therefrom, as well as joining the banned Muslim Brotherhood.
