January 3, 2017 at 12:27 pm

The Egyptian army announced yesterday that it had destroyed 12 tunnels along its border with the Gaza Strip and arrested 100 illegal migrants between 18-28 December 2016, Arab48.com reported.

Army spokesperson Colonel Tamer Al-Rifae said in a statement that the army had destroyed 12 tunnels, without giving details about when they were demolished.

Since the middle of September 2015, the Egyptian army has been injecting sea water into tunnels along the Egyptian borders with Gaza in order to destroy them.

At the same time, the army has been carrying out a wide military operation in the governorate of North Sinai, Egyptian Rafah and other cities near to the borders with Gaza in order to undermine the smuggling of urgent commodities to the coastal enclave.

Meanwhile, the spokesman said that 74 illegal migrants were arrested in Al-Salloum on the borders with Libya in the west of the country.

In the area of Shalateen in the southern part of the country, the army arrested 26 Syrian migrants trying to enter the country.
