Police man shot dead in armed attack in Cairo

January 4, 2017 at 12:51 pm

Armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on a police vehicle killing an Egyptian policeman and wounding another in the south of Cairo yesterday, according to security sources.

The attack took place yesterday in Abshway, a town in the governorate of Faiyum.

“Armed men riding a motorcycle opened fire on the vehicle carrying Major Mahmud Abdel Alim, head of police detectives at Abshway, and a detective who accompanied him,” a security source told AFP.

The detective that was shot, Yehia Abdel Satar, died after receiving two bullet wounds to his chest.

The second officer, Major Abdel Alim, was transferred to a police hospital in Cairo where he was said to be in critical condition.

No one has claimed responsibility for the shooting as of yet.

Attacks on security forces have escalated since the military ousted democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 and launched a crackdown on Islamists.
