Israel detains 100 Palestinians in 2017

January 7, 2017 at 5:30 am

A human rights organisation has reported that, since the beginning of 2017, Israel has detained 100 Palestinians including 18 minors and three women.

The Palestinian Prisoner Society said that the Israeli arrests occurred between 1-5 January, noting that the occupation arrested six Palestinians early yesterday morning from Hebron, Tubas and Qalqilya.

In related developments, the Asra Media Office, a Palestinian prisoner rights advocacy group, stated that Israeli authorities have greatly escalated administrative detentions against Palestinian prisoners in 2016, specifically against those from Hebron.

The advocacy group stated that 576 administrative detentions were issued against prisoners from Hebron (34 per cent of the total number of administrative detentions) during 2016.

Israel frequently makes use of what it calls “administrative detention”, where Palestinians may be held for six months without charge, liable for indefinite extension.
