Kuwait deported around 29,000 expats last year, an average of nearly 80 every day, Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Qabas reported new government statistics showing.

“The workers violated residence and labour laws put in place and took part in criminal activities,” a Kuwaiti security source told the paper.

The deportation process was significantly hastened during 2016, with expats spending around a week in deportation detention centres before being flown back to their home countries.

At least 32 per cent of those deported last year were nationals of South Asian countries, Egyptians were the second highest nationality, with 22 per cent of those being deported being Egyptian. There are currently believed to be around 3.3 million expats living in Kuwait, making up 70 per cent of the population.
