Morocco’s city of Marrakesh has been listed in French daily Le Monde’s list of 20 must-visit cities this year. Marrakech was also shortlisted as part of The New York Times’s 52 must-visit world destinations in 2017.

Basing its decision on three fundamental criteria, culture, price and climate, Morocco’s ranking was compiled by contributing travel agencies and tour operators in France, the paper said.

Marrakech was chosen due to a number of factors including safety, outstanding hotels, and a state-of-the-art airport that has been refurbished and endowed with a new terminal on the eve of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP22) that was held in the city in November last year.

“Morocco, which was scorned because of instability in the whole region, is coming back in force,” head of Kayak.fr, John-Lee Saez, explained.

Oman featured first in Le Monde’s ranking for its charm and well-maintained heritage and natural landscapes and was praised by the daily for being an “authentic destination.”

Marrakech was ranked 11th by The New York Times among the 52 global, must-visit destinations in 2017, with Jardin Majorelle featured as its main must-visit landmark.
