Hollande calls for dialogue with Haftar to resolve Libyan crisis

January 13, 2017 at 9:56 am

French President François Hollande has called for support for the Libyan government headed by Fayez Serraj, while stressing that dialogue between Serraj and renegade General Khalifa Haftar is vital to resolve the crisis in the country.

In his annual foreign policy speech to the diplomatic corps, Hollande described the situation in Libya as “disturbing”. It is, he said, the main cause of the flow of illegal migrants to Europe.

Furthermore, insisted the French leader, “Terrorists are taking advantage of the chaos in Libya to implement their plans.”

Hollande also touched on the situation in Syria, accusing President Bashar Al-Assad of standing behind the Syrian crisis. The only people to be excluded from the peace process, he added, are the extremists.
