Security firms are prospering in the Gaza Strip, creating hundreds of jobs in the process, writes MEMO’s correspondent. The first company opened almost seven years ago offering services to the private and public sectors.

The firm, which is licensed by the official authority in Gaza, has focused on recruiting young people. They were trained in cooperation with the official security services in Gaza. The company has become expert in securing movable and immovable valuables and property, as well as guarding individuals.

Now there are three security companies in Gaza; there are also seven in the occupied West Bank. The general manager of Castle Security told MEMO that his company offers services to banks, universities, hotels, private homes and other facilities. Akram Al-Bal’awi explained that it also provides bodyguards and protection when moving large amounts of cash and valuables.

According to one security expert, these companies have solved a major problem for international organisations which have offices in Gaza. A number had to suspend their work for a while because they did not want to deal with the official security services, which have been run by Hamas since mid-2007.

The expert pointed out that the firms have been known to provide security for international envoys, including those working with UNRWA, when they visit the Gaza Strip.
