Sudan’s President Omar Al-Bashir will meet his South Sudanese counterpart, Salva Kiir Mayardit, on the sidelines of the 28th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa this week, Quds Press has reported. According to a political adviser at the presidential palace, Dr Amin Hassan Omar, the meeting between the two presidents will be to discuss bilateral relations and ensure the implementation of the agreements signed between them regarding security, trade, border and oil.

“We in Sudan are not convinced with the level of implementation of the agreements signed between Khartoum and Juba,” he explained, “especially the demarcation of the border.” Omar, who is also the government official dealing with the Darfur file, added that the state of South Sudan still harbours the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, SPLM Northern Sector, “which harms Sudan.”

When asked if the meeting will discuss Sudan’s contribution to reconciliation and stability in South Sudan, the Khartoum official pointed out that Sudan is working through the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) countries to solve any disagreements among the southerners. “Any role should be within this framework.”

In passing, Omar suggested that Donald Trump’s travel ban to stop people from a number of countries, including Sudan, entering the US “is nothing new” as far as US-Sudan relations are concerned.
