Al-Sarraj: UN needs to be clearer with its strategy in Libya

The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) needs a clearer political strategy and needs to facilitate greater coordination between UN agencies and the international community, according to the head of the Presidency Council (PC) Fayez Al-Sarraj.

Speaking in Ethiopia, during a meeting on the sidelines of the African Union summit taking place in Addis Ababa, Al-Sarraj asked the new UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to aid Libya’s humanitarian plight.

Al-Sarraj also suggested that the UN mission’s position in relation to aid had weakened in recent years.

Guterres described the PC and the Government of National Accord, which the UN backs, as “the only legitimate government in the country” and called on the various political factions to compromise in order to find a consensus.

The meeting also looked at Libya’s investments across the continent and the increasing concerns regarding the economic situation in the country.
