Kuwait considers export of electricity to Iraq

February 2, 2017 at 9:26 am

Kuwait’s Minister of Oil, Electricity and Water, Isam Al-Marzouq, has said that his country will study the possibility of exporting electricity to Iraq in exchange for natural gas to run Kuwaiti power plants, Kuwait Al-Rai has reported. The minister explained on Wednesday that the proposal will be discussed with Iraqi officials.

Marzouq predicted Kuwait’s electrical output to reach 39,000 megawatts by 2035, noting that current production of the power plants exceeds 18,000 megawatts. The maximum rate of consumption at the moment is around 15,000 megawatts, leaving a surplus which could be exported to some neighbouring countries.

The minister said that his officials are seeking to improve the global indicators of the electricity grid both in terms of reducing the power cut period for consumers or the period of time required to deliver electricity to residential and development projects. He added that he is proud that his ministry came first among Kuwait’s government departments in responding to consumers to resolve their problems.
